Have you ever caught yourself making assumptions about someone at work?Maybe an employee missed a deadline and you assumed they were not committed. Maybe someone was quiet in a meeting and you thought they were disengaged. Or maybe a coworker questioned your idea and you assumed they were being difficult.
The reality is that we rarely know the whole story.
One of the most valuable leadership habits we can develop is choosing curios ity instead of assumption.
Curiosity starts with simple questions.
“Can you help me understand what happened?”
“What challenges are you running into?”
“What am I missing?”
Those questions create conversation. Assumptions usually create distance.
Choosing curiosity does not mean lowering expectations or avoiding accountability. It means taking the time to understand the situation before deciding how to respond. In my experience, accountability is much more effective when people feel heard and respected.
Some of the best leadership conversations begin with a question instead of an answer. They create space for trust, problem solving, and growth.
The next time you find yourself jumping to a conclusion, pause for a moment. Ask another question. Listen a little longer.
You may find that the story you created in your mind is very different from the reality.
Leadership is not about always having the right answer. It is about creating an environment where people feel comfortable sharing the truth. That starts with curiosity.
