Delegating Isn't About Letting Go. It's About Helping Others Grow.

One of the biggest challenges I see with leaders is delegation. Not because they don't want to develop their team, but because they genuinely care about the outcome. They worry the work won't be done correctly, it will take longer to explain than to do themselves, or they'll end up fixing mistakes later.

So they keep taking on more.

At first, it can feel like the right decision. The work gets done, deadlines are met, and the leader feels in control. Over time, though, that control comes at a cost.

Leaders become overwhelmed, burnout becomes more likely, and wellness suffers. Meanwhile, team members miss opportunities to learn, build confidence, and prepare for bigger responsibilities. When one person holds all the knowledge and all the work, everyone loses.

Effective delegation doesn't mean walking away. It means setting people up for success.

That starts with being clear about expectations. Explain what success looks like, establish timelines, and make sure priorities are understood. Stay available for questions, check in along the way, and hold people accountable for the commitments they've made.

Trust doesn't have to be all or nothing. It can be built over time.

Start by delegating smaller tasks. As people demonstrate reliability and confidence, gradually increase the complexity and responsibility of the work. Delegation becomes less about giving work away and more about developing future leaders.

The strongest leaders aren't the ones who do everything themselves. They're the ones who create an environment where others can learn, contribute, and grow.

That's how you build stronger teams. That's how you protect your own well-being. And that's how leadership creates a lasting impact.
